Did you know our shoes are individually crafted in Europe? More specifically - northern Portugal just outside of Porto.

Many people think of Italy as making the highest quality shoes in the world, but we believe Portugal makes just as good - or even better - shoes!

Renowned for their attention to detail, superior materials, and unparalleled skill, Portuguese shoemakers have earned a well-deserved reputation for producing some of the finest footwear in the world.

During our trip to Portugal last year, we visited the shoe museum called Museu do Calçado in São João da Madeira, and were blown away at the deep history of shoemaking in Portugal. Here are some of the things we learned:

A Legacy of Tradition

The tradition of shoemaking in Portugal dates back centuries, with its roots embedded deeply in the country's cultural and economic history. Historically, Portugal has been a hub for trade and commerce, and as such, the demand for finely crafted footwear has always been high.

Portuguese artisans, known as sapateiros, honed their skills over generations, passing down techniques and knowledge that continue to inform the craft to this day.

Quality Materials and Attention to Detail

One of the hallmarks of Portuguese shoemaking is the meticulous attention paid to every aspect of the process, from the selection of materials to the finishing touches. Portuguese shoemakers take great pride in sourcing only the finest leathers and materials, often opting for locally sourced options known for their durability and beauty. All of our leathers are Leather Working Group Gold Rated (more on that here), making sure they meet the highest quality, sustainability and ethical standards.

Traditional techniques are combined with modern innovations to create shoes that not only look exquisite but also provide unparalleled comfort and longevity. Each pair undergoes a rigorous process of inspection and quality control, ensuring that only the best products make it to market.

The Portuguese Shoemaking Process

The process of crafting a pair of Portuguese shoes is a labor of love that requires patience, skill, and precision.

It typically begins with the design phase, where master craftsmen translate their creative vision into detailed sketches and patterns.

These designs are then brought to life by skilled artisans who carefully cut, stitch, and assemble each component by hand.

We design ours in California and then work closely with our partners in Portugal to perfect the fit and finish of the shoes (more behind the scenes here).

Commitment to Sustainability

Aside from the high quality and ethical standards (more on that here), Portugal is committed to making shoes that is less wasteful and better for the environment.
