One of my favorite parts of running Joyasol is getting to travel, meet the people behind our shoes, and discover new inspiration along the way.

I recently returned from a week in Portugal and Spain, where I visited our manufacturing partners, explored new materials, and attended FUTURMODA, one of Spain's leading footwear materials and components trade shows.

It was a wonderful reminder of why we chose to make our shoes in Europe in the first place, and how much history, craftsmanship, and creativity go into something as simple as a pair of shoes.

A Rich History of Shoemaking

Portugal and Spain have long histories of shoemaking, with generations of skilled artisans passing down their knowledge and techniques.

Portugal, in particular, has become one of Europe's most respected footwear manufacturing destinations. In regions like São João da Madeira and Felgueiras, shoemaking has been part of the local economy and culture for generations.

Spain has an equally fascinating footwear heritage, especially around Alicante and Elche, where craftsmanship, leatherworking, and innovative design have helped shape the country's footwear industry.

What I love about these places is that shoemaking isn't just another business. It's a craft that families and communities have built their lives around.

When you visit these factories and meet the people doing the work, you gain a whole new appreciation for what goes into a well-made shoe.

Why Quality Still Matters

Before starting Joyasol, I worked for another footwear brand that manufactured in Portugal. That experience gave me an early appreciation for the quality of Portuguese shoemaking and ultimately influenced where I wanted to produce my own collection.

Over the years, I've learned that the difference between an average shoe and a beautiful, well-made one often comes down to the smallest details. If you've ever wondered what really separates a well-made shoe from the rest, we break it down in our guide to How to Tell if Shoes Are High Quality.

The way leather is cut, how the upper is stitched, the construction of the sole, and how everything comes together all make a difference.

During this trip, I was reminded that there is simply no substitute for skilled hands and years of experience.

At Joyasol, more than 40 hands can contribute to bringing a single shoe design to life. It's a process that takes time, patience, and attention to detail, and one we never want to take for granted.

Comfort Should Never Be an Afterthought

One of the biggest things I've learned working in footwear is that a beautiful shoe means very little if you can't actually wear it.

Comfort has always been a priority for Joyasol, and it's something I think more women are looking for today.

But comfort isn't just about adding extra cushioning. It's about the shape of the shoe, the flexibility of the materials, the construction, the fit, and how everything works together.

A well-made shoe should feel good on your feet while still making you feel put together.

During our factory visits, we discussed fit, materials, and small design adjustments that can make a big difference in how a shoe feels.

These are the details customers may never see, but they certainly notice when wearing the finished product.

A Little Inspiration From Spain

Another highlight of the trip was attending FUTURMODA in Alicante, Spain.

Imagine walking into a giant jewel box filled with beautiful leathers, fabrics, textures, colors, embellishments, and accessories. That's exactly how it felt!

There was so much to touch, feel, and explore, along with conversations about new trends, materials, and the direction of the footwear industry.

I was especially drawn to the interesting textures, beautiful colors, and little details that can give a shoe personality.

While Joyasol will always have a foundation of timeless, wearable styles, I also love the idea of introducing a little more playfulness into future collections.

After all, getting dressed should be fun!

The Future of Footwear: Fewer, Better, More Thoughtful Choices

If there's one thing this trip reinforced for me, it's that the future of footwear doesn't have to mean producing more shoes, faster.

I believe there's room for a more thoughtful approach, one that values craftsmanship, quality materials, comfort, and designs that women will want to wear for years.

Of course, innovation is important too. New materials, techniques, and technologies continue to create exciting possibilities for the footwear industry.

But I think the most interesting opportunities come from combining that innovation with traditional craftsmanship.

For Joyasol, that means continuing to work closely with our manufacturing partners, producing in small batches, and being intentional about what we create. Read more about our process here.

Bringing It All Back to Joyasol

I returned home feeling grateful for the people we work with and excited about what's ahead.

One of the most rewarding parts of building this brand is seeing an idea go from a sketch or material sample to a finished pair of shoes.

And getting to experience the places, people, and traditions behind that process makes it even more meaningful.

As we continue developing future Joyasol collections, my goal remains the same: to create beautiful, comfortable shoes that are thoughtfully made and designed to be worn and loved.

Thank you for being part of the journey!

With love,

Christina
