Have you ever been to San Francisco? There’s really no city in the U.S. that captures our hearts just like SF does. We lived in this magical city for 4+ years and are sharing all the scoop when it comes to visiting this world-class city, and in particular the neighborhood we lived – The Marina District.

The Marina District is one of San Francisco's most scenic and vibrant neighborhoods. Known for its stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, charming streets, and lively atmosphere, it’s a must-visit area for tourists and locals alike.

It’s the perfect destination for a girls getaway or romantic weekend away. So without further ado, here are our top tips!

Getting There

Public transportation is unfortunately not the easiest to the Marina.  We suggest renting a car or taking an Uber from the airport.

By Car:

From downtown San Francisco, head northwest on Van Ness Avenue and turn left onto Bay Street, which leads directly into the Marina District.

Parking can be challenging, especially on weekends. Metered street parking is available, but be prepared to search for a spot. Never leave valuables in the car and be sure to check meters for any details to avoid tickets!

By Public Transport:

Bus: The 30-Stockton and 22-Fillmore buses service the Marina District.
Trolley: The F-Market streetcar also connects downtown to the waterfront area, which is a short walk to the Marina.

Main Attractions
1. Palace of Fine Arts:

This iconic landmark, originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, is a must-see. Its Greco-Roman architecture and serene lagoon provide fantastic photo opportunities.
Tip: Visit during the early morning or late afternoon for the best lighting for photographs. It can get crowded, so plan accordingly!

2. Marina Green:

A large grassy area perfect for picnicking, flying kites, or just relaxing while taking in views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Activities: Jogging, biking, and walking along the waterfront are popular here.

3. Crissy Field:

Once a military airfield, Crissy Field is now a beloved recreational area with beaches, picnic spots, and trails. We suggest getting deli sandwiches on Chestnut Street and setting up a picnic to enjoy the view! There's also a Warming Hut nearby that is great for grabbing snacks and drinks.

4. Fort Mason:

A former military post that now hosts a variety of cultural events, galleries, and the famous Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture.

Activities: Explore the museums, attend a workshop, or enjoy a vegetarian meal at Greens Restaurant, which offers fantastic bay views and delicious, healthy food.

Dining and Drinking

1. Chestnut & Union Street:

The heart of the Marina’s dining scene, Chestnut Street is lined with restaurants, cafes, and bars.

The Tipsy Pig: A popular gastropub with a cozy atmosphere and great comfort food.
The Dorian: for a fun, contemporary vibe and great cocktail menu.

On Fridays, Fort Mason hosts this fun food truck gathering, featuring a wide variety of international cuisines and live music.

Outdoor Activities

1. Sailing and Water Sports:

The Marina is home to several yacht clubs and offers opportunities for sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Sailing over to Sausalito and Marin will make you feel like you're in the South of France!

2. Hiking and Biking:

Golden Gate Promenade: This scenic route runs from Fort Mason to the base of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Presidio Trails: Explore the extensive trails of the Presidio, which offer breathtaking views and historical sites.

Rent a bike and helmet from a bike shop on Lombard St. and explore!

Hotel Drisco: While not technically in the Marina, it's nearby and offers stunning views of the bay.

2. Vacation Rentals:

Consider renting an apartment or house through platforms like Airbnb or VRBO for a more local experience.

Additional Tips
Weather: San Francisco’s weather can be unpredictable. Dress in layers to stay comfortable. July and August tend to be the coldest and foggiest so be prepared! Opt for comfy walking shoes, like our Joyasol Paisley sneakers, to take you anywhere around the city in comfort and style!

Safety: The Marina District is generally safe, but it’s always wise to stay alert and keep an eye on your belongings. Car break-ins are unfortunately common, so never leave valuables in plain sight.

Local Etiquette: Be mindful of the residents. Respect noise levels, especially in the evening.
